Long Island's Commercial Aviation Heritage: Airports and Airlines
Although Floyd Bennett Field, JFK International, and La Guardia airports are considered "Long Island" locations, there were a half-dozen Nassau and Suffolk County facilities that provided scheduled and charter passenger-carrying airline service in traditional land, amphibious flying boat, and rotary-wing helicopter formats.
Roosevelt Field is located in Roosevelt, New York:
The Roosevelt Field moniker was once a huge stretch of aviation activity that won it the unofficial title of "world's greatest airport," but it has since been forgotten and possibly only connected with a retail mall.
It arose from the "Hempstead Plains" in the same way as trees eventually emerge from flat areas.
According to Joshua Stoff's "Historic Aircraft and Spacecraft at the Cradle of Aviation Museum," "the topmost layer of Nassau County, known as the Hempstead Plains, (was) the only natural prairie east of the Allegheny Mountains" (Dover Publications, 2001, p. viii)."This location proved to be a perfect flying field, with just thick grasses and scattered farmhouses, and was the site of strong aviation activity for nearly 50 years."
It was the consequence of both geographical and topographic factors, and is sometimes described to as "the cradle of aviation." Its closeness to Manhattan offered a dense population base, its east coast position encouraged cross-country travel to the west, and its unimpeded, water-surrounding nature made it the perfect departure point for flights over Long Island Sound to Connecticut and New England. along the east coast to the mid-Atlantic states and Florida, then over the ocean for intercontinental links between North America and Europe.
There got its first wings in 1909, when Dr. Henry Walden, a member of the Aeronautic Society of New York, took off in the first American monoplane from it, due to the inadequacy of the group's previous location, Morris Park in the Bronx.
Even so, it turned out to be insufficient.
"One mile to the east, the Hampstead Plains maintained their treeless and unimpeded expanse, and this wider tract was actually more suited than Mineola's landscape, which was small and confined in by highways in preparation for housing construction," Stoff notes (ibid, p. 5.)
The MOISSANT Aviation School, which had relocated from the now-inadequately sized Nassau Boulevard Flying Field, established permanent roots east of Clinton Road in Garden City by the spring of 1911, the year the expanse became the Hempstead Plains Airfield.
It was the country's first airport, covering 1,000 acres and included 25 wooden hangars as well as grandstands for air show spectators.
However, once the United States entered World War I in 1917, experimental flying became legitimate military operations with the introduction of four Curtiss Jenny biplanes, transforming the airport into one of only two Army installations in the country.
It was given the name HAZELHURST Station during the two years leading up to 1919, in recognition of Second Lieutenant Leighton System aimed, Jr., who died in an aviation accident at College Park, Maryland, on June 11, 1912.
In 1917, a second field, dubbed Aviation Filed #2, was created south of the current one, but was renamed Mitchel Field the following year in commemoration of John Michel, the New York City mayor who died in a plane crash in Louisiana.
With the purchase of Curtiss Field in 1920, the Curtiss Flying Service relocated to Garden City and bought HAZELHURST Field.
According to Joshua Stoff in his third book, "The Aerospace Heritage of Long Island," "aviation began to impact many facets of American society throughout the 1920s" (Heart of the Lakes Publishing, 1989, p. 29). "The public plainly perceived the untapped commercial possibilities of aviation: airmail, aerial advertising, mapping, and sport, all of which presented themselves on Long Island."
One of the earliest indigenous carriers was created about this period. Long Island Airways, founded in 1923 by Juan TRIPPE, a former member of the Yale Flying Club, and other former members of the Yale Flying Club, acted as an airborne taxi service, delivering rich New York socialites to rural estates in war-surplus planes. Between 1923 and 1925, it was in operation.
Although the western sector of the Long Island expanse was given the Curtiss name to recognize the company's owner, the eastern sector, divided by a ravine, was given the Roosevelt Field nickname following the death of President Theodore Roosevelt's son, Quentin Roosevelt, in a 1918 plane crash in France.
Roosevelt Field had its own regular airline service, despite the fact that Floyd Bennett Field, which opened on May 26, 1931, became the hub of early commercial operations due to its bigger acreage, paved runways, and Brooklyn-proximity to Manhattan.![Getaway Powder - AUDIO MUSIC--COPYRIGHT FREE MUSIC PRO[AUDIO MUSIC] Getaway Powder - AUDIO MUSIC--COPYRIGHT FREE MUSIC PRO[AUDIO MUSIC]](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVDA_797wThKrMRBm-f_qHiFt5jVVrg0XSD1bhH8PjLxD4JCR1Ql_ONotlpPdNtUqduMCVHi1thHqC-vHhLpteXwL6qCZrWxnQJPh6RSwDCFt16cq38qtdbbR7L8fe8uIChjniybgu64Ik/w640-h426/pexels-pixabay-265087.jpg)
According to Stoff in "Roosevelt Field: World's Premier AIRPOR"T, "LICON (for "Long Island-Connecticut") Airways was formed in 1932, Roosevelt Field's first and only scheduled airline" (op. cit., pp 73-74). "From Long Island to Newark, Atlantic City, Providence, New Haven, and Bridgeport, they flew Stinson Trimotors."
The eight-month duty began on November 10, 1933, and ended in July of the following year.
Roosevelt Field, being the country's largest civilian airport, continues to grow. Thirty-two enterprises offered anything from petrol to full-size aircraft, which could be kept in the 13,000 square foot hangar. Access to the Mineola Station was facilitated by paved roads with complimentary parking, and rail travel was made feasible by 80 daily trains from Manhattan and Brooklyn.
The facility, which had three asphalt runways, could handle up to 400 takeoffs per hour during the start of the 1930s.
From 1919 through 1939, the Golden Age of Aviation mirrored Roosevelt Field's own era of development and achievement, laying the groundwork for feats, breakthroughs, and record-breaking flights. However, it quickly adopted a World War II-required military purpose, much like the separate Mitchel field to the south.
Five Navy-leased hangars were used as modification facilities for planes heading to Europe, and military pilot training was emphasized above civilian pilot training. The once-premier airfield began to decay and never regained its speed, despite the fact that 272 aircraft were based there at the end of 1940.
Without the letter G. I. The Roosevelt Aviation School, formerly regarded as the country's foremost aviation instructional institution, was forced to shutter by the end of the decade, and the Roosevelt Field Inn Hotel, with little activity, followed suit, forcing it into revenue-scarce bankruptcy.
After the last 50 planes were flown to their new Long Island homes, the airport, which was known as the "cradle of aviation" because of its numerous historic flights, including Charles Lindbergh's solo transatlantic crossing in the "Spirit of St. Louis" in 1927, was officially closed on May 31, 1951.
departing the quiet sentinel that had started as the Hempstead Plains and fostered aviation to a great level of maturity. Five years later, a shopping complex arose from this expanse, with the only thing in connection with the area's past magnificence being its name: Roosevelt Field.![Getaway Powder - AUDIO MUSIC--COPYRIGHT FREE MUSIC PRO[AUDIO MUSIC] Getaway Powder - AUDIO MUSIC--COPYRIGHT FREE MUSIC PRO[AUDIO MUSIC]](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2a-o6ttKRlyVj7h8L4AaZyZJUetKQuUcOgdn1R3a-pXRO6bA8iuf98Nw8YR1abUa0HFmFYxO-5ZYdgxaSyiKxL-4uFE0e1qFPgY9qB7im61TB3o_JW-sPYLucupZX4N-iX6pmB72jU5Ha/w640-h426/pexels-deepu-b-iyer-2857477.jpg)
Roosevelt Field Heliport is a heliport located in Roosevelt, New York:
The Roosevelt Field heliport, located on the side of a shopping mall in an Industrial Park, was the last and only, albeit fleeting, thread to the name that once heralded the vast aeronautical expanse. The main operator was Island Helicopter Corporation, which provided commuter, business, and sightseeing flights using the last parcel of the Hempstead Plains that had not been overtaken by businesses.
With 12-passenger Sikorsky S-62As, it began regularly scheduled shuttle flights from Long Island to both the East 60th Street and Wall Street helipads in Manhattan on April 26, 1971.
It was the first totally amphibious rotary-wing design, capable of operating from land with two main and a single tail wheel undercarriage, and water, ice, snow, tundra, and more. It was powered by a 1,250-shp General Electric T-58-GE-8 turboshaft engine inductive loads to 730 main battery.
with its hull-shaped fuselage and swamp It had an 8,300-pound gross weight, a 98-mph cruising speed, a 400-nautical-mile range, and an 11,200-foot service ceiling thanks to its 53-foot rotor diameter and 2,206-square-foot disc area.![Getaway Powder - AUDIO MUSIC--COPYRIGHT FREE MUSIC PRO[AUDIO MUSIC] Getaway Powder - AUDIO MUSIC--COPYRIGHT FREE MUSIC PRO[AUDIO MUSIC]](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2a-o6ttKRlyVj7h8L4AaZyZJUetKQuUcOgdn1R3a-pXRO6bA8iuf98Nw8YR1abUa0HFmFYxO-5ZYdgxaSyiKxL-4uFE0e1qFPgY9qB7im61TB3o_JW-sPYLucupZX4N-iX6pmB72jU5Ha/w640-h426/pexels-deepu-b-iyer-2857477.jpg)
Island Helicopter's initial schedule, which included two New York-bound departures at 0745 and 0845 and returns at 1715 and 1745, cost $10.00 each way and covered the 25 miles in a blink of an eye 15 minutes, giving passengers extra morning sleep and significantly removing the hassles and stresses of road or rail commutes. The method's cost, however, was exorbitant to most, and the hoped-for 24 daily round excursions, which would have been subject to weather minima, never happened.
Port Washington is located in the state of New York :
There was never a single paved runway other than the roads connecting to this watery air field. Yet, though for a limited while, it became the departure point and destination for once-mighty, multi-passenger, and highly luxury flying boats crossing the Atlantic to Bermuda and Europe.
Pan American chose Port Washington as its interim operational base until its more permanent facilities, such as the Marine Air Terminal at North Beach, were completed. Pan American had long wanted to start scheduled service from New York to complement its existing Martin M-130 Pacific routes from San Francisco (Alameda) to Hong Kong via Hawaii, Midway, Wake Island, Guam, and Manila.
Lindbergh, piloting a Lockheed Sirius equipped with navigation equipment, made an exploratory expedition to Greenland, Iceland, the Scandinavian countries, the Faroe and Shetland islands, the Baltics, Leningrad, Moscow, Spain, Portugal, and the Azores that year, issuing a 1934 report dispelling two of the perceived route restrictions.
Although northern latitude routes to Europe were not without difficulties, he determined that they had been considerably overstated, and that the harshness of the prevailing weather had also been substantially overstated.
Pan American decided to build its own because to a shortage of appropriate civil seaplane bases in the northeastern United States and the coastal regions of Canada.![Getaway Powder - AUDIO MUSIC--COPYRIGHT FREE MUSIC PRO[AUDIO MUSIC] Getaway Powder - AUDIO MUSIC--COPYRIGHT FREE MUSIC PRO[AUDIO MUSIC]](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2a-o6ttKRlyVj7h8L4AaZyZJUetKQuUcOgdn1R3a-pXRO6bA8iuf98Nw8YR1abUa0HFmFYxO-5ZYdgxaSyiKxL-4uFE0e1qFPgY9qB7im61TB3o_JW-sPYLucupZX4N-iX6pmB72jU5Ha/w640-h426/pexels-deepu-b-iyer-2857477.jpg)
According to R. E. G. Davies in "Airlines of the United States since 1914," "Pan American obtained its own aircraft stationed at Port Washington, Long Island" in 1933. (Smithsonian Institution Press, 1998, p. 244). "The next year, the city of Baltimore commenced discussions for the lease of a naval facility to be built by that city."
Pan American Airways purchased the American Aeronautical Corporation's hangar and seaplane ramp complex in December 1937, describing it as a 12-acre, irregularly-shaped complex adjacent to Port Washington with two hangars, two ramps, and the Plum Point floating walk in the 1937 "PAA Airport Number B-335-4" document. It indicated that its landing and takeoff zones were "unlimited in Long Island Sound."
Its initial regular service was far shorter than that to Europe, with Bermuda as its destination, and was the consequence of reciprocal route rights granted by the British government, with its own Imperial Airways also connecting the United States to the island.
On May 25, 1937, a Pan American Sikorsky S-42B quad-engine flying boat under the command of Captain Harold S. took out in the opposite direction for the first survey flight. Gray's flight from Port Washington and Imperial Airways' Short C class flight from Bermuda. The two airlines followed up with three additional similar flights in June, along with an official service launch, although the first regularly scheduled one was on the 18th, with each airline running a single weekly roundtrip.
On August 25, two months later, a second weekly frequency, again with the S-42B, was launched. The one-way fare was $70.00 and the return fare was $120.00.
"The Bermuda operation served as a good flying laboratory for studying Atlantic weather and flight challenges, as well as acquiring expertise with in-flight deicing," Davies says (ibid, p. 256). "The S-42, the biggest aircraft of its time, was equipped with deicing boots and propeller deicing technology."
Apart from the need for an aquatic base from which to launch transatlantic service later, the company lacked suitable equipment, as its existing M-130 flying boats would not have been able to provide both sufficient range and payload against prevailing headwinds to make the venture a profitable reality.
The answer was in the specifications for a flying boat, which Boeing met with the B314, triggering a first order for six on July 2, 1936.
The result was a colossus, a genuine flying ocean liner that was both efficient and graceful, and in a league of its own. It had a 106-foot overall length and sprouted enormous, 14-cylinder, two-row, 1,500-hp Wright Cyclone R-2600-A2;piston engines housed in 59-inch-diameter nacelles and drove three-bladed, 14.9-foot-diameter, fully feathering Hamilton Standard hydromantic propellers.
Wings that stretched 152 feet and were separated into three portions: a central, hull-integral section that extended beyond the inner engine nacelles, and two outer, waterproof parts. The entire capacity of the fuel was 4,200 gallons.
The middle portion and lower fuselage-extending spall liners carried it. They might also be used as entrance platforms for passengers, leading to the cabin floor. The primary wings were so large that they included inner catwalks to allow for in-flight examination and repair of their structure as well as the engines.
The aircraft had a payload capacity of 23,500 pounds and a gross weight of 82,500 pounds.
It had a soundproofed main deck with five, ten-passenger compartments; a single, unique, four-passenger section; a deluxe bridal suite; a dining area; a full-service galley; and a luxury bridal suite.
There is a men's restroom and a women's powder room. In convertible beds, the ship could carry 74 passengers during the day and 34 passengers at night.
Pan American conducted a number of North Atlantic survey flights after establishing its Atlantic Division in the spring of 1937, each extending further across the ocean with a Sikorsky S-42B registered NC 16736 and named "Clipper III" to reflect the towering sailing ships that had once plied the seas.
The first flew to SHEDIAC, New Brunswick on June 25, the second to BOTWOOD, Newfoundland on June 27, the third to FOYNES, Ireland, and Southampton on July 3, and the fourth to the same destination on August 22.
Six days earlier, a southern survey route carried it to Bermuda, the Azores, Lisbon, Marseilles, and Southampton.
Four days later, on June 28, the first planned transatlantic flight left Port Washington. It transported 22 passengers, piloted by Captain R. O. D. Sullivan and operated by the "Dixie Clipper," who embarked amid the blare of a brass band.
Moving up on its step hull and disengaging itself from Manhasset Bay immediately after its mooring lines were freed at 1500, with 11 crew members and 408 pounds of mail. After a perfect sail of the southern route, it arrived at Marseilles, France, the next day.
On July 8, the "Yankee Clipper" carried 17 people on the first northern one. The one-way fare was $375.00, and the round-trip fare was $675.00.
The once-weekly, 3,411-mile northern passage, known as Fight 100, departed Port Washington at 0730 and arrived in SHEDIAC, New Brunswick, at 1230 on June 24, 1939, according to Pan American's itinerary. It took out for BOTWOOD, Newfoundland, an hour later, alighting at 1630.
before departing at 1800 for the maritime leg of the voyage, arriving in FOYNES, Ireland, at 0830 the next day and taking to the skies at 0930. At 1300 p.m., it arrived at Southampton. Flight 101 returned two days later, at 1400, and landed at Port Washington the next day, also at 1400, reversing its intermediate landing sequence.
The 4,251-mile southern route, flown under flight number 120, departed at 1200, transited Horta, the Azores (0700 the next day/0800 the next day) and Lisbon (1700 the same day/0700 the next morning), and landed in Marseilles at 1500, two days after leaving Long Island. The return flight, Flight 121, took off at 0800 and landed at 0700 the next day in Port Washington.
Republic Airport is located in Republic, Republic: In its century of existence, Farmingdale's Republic Airport, which was never designed for passenger-carrying commercial operations, eventually fielded limited, irregular scheduled and charter service.
According to Ken NEUBECK and Leroy E. Douglas in "Airplane Manufacturing in Farmingdale," "the Industrial Revolution and aircraft production came to Farmingdale during World War I when Lawrence Sperry and Sydney Breese built their pioneering facilities in the city" (Arcadia Publishing, 2016, p. 9).
"They were attracted by the existence of two Long Island Railroad branches... the surrounding Route 24, which carried vehicle and truck traffic to and from the Fifty-Ninth Street Bridge in Manhattan; the flat outwash plain, which supplied acreage for flying fields; and the accessibility to competent employees... "
Despite the fact that the airport was gradually transformed from its original, 77,967-acre Fairchild Flying Field to the current Republic Airport, and is now the third-busiest New York State facility in terms of aircraft movements, it was primarily used by military and civil manufacturers, including the Fairchild Aviation Corporation.
To mention a few, there's the American Airplane and Engine Corporation, Grumman, SEVERSKY, Ranger, Republic, Fairchild-Hiller, Fairchild Republic, and EDO.
Nonetheless, in 1986, it was enlarged to include general aviation, as evidenced by the arrival on December 7 of a Ramey Air Service twin-engine Beechcraft from adjacent Long Island MacArthur Airport. Air Spur is a contracted air taxi/commuter service operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).
In an attempt to turn the facility into a gateway into the national transportation system, it opened a Long Island link to the three JFK International, La Guardia, and Newark airports with a $12.00 one-way price four years later.
Despite the 60,000-pound gross weight limitation imposed by the New York State Department of Transportation in 1984, Republic may still provide adjacent state service by employing its business-lined Route 110 corridor as a possible passenger base.
Cosmopolitan Airlines, based at Republic Airport, made one of the first scheduled attempts in 1978, when it began service with a single 44-passenger former Finnair Offered by public CV-340 and two 52-passenger ex-Swissair Performance of private CV-440 Metropolitans from its own Cosmopolitan Sky Center to Albany, Boston, and Atlantic City.
The later destination, which was available every day, was featured in a $44.95 package that included the flight, ground transportation to the Claridge Hotel and Casino, a $20.00 food and beverage voucher, and a $5.00 coupon usable on the following trip. In Atlantic City, same-day returns allowed for a nine-hour stay. Despite the fact that it ceased operations at the end of 1983, It was planning to extend its public charter service to include Buffalo, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore.
The construction of the two-story, 50,000-square-foot passenger terminal, which was finished that year, was part of Republic's scheduled carrier strategy. Loong Island Airlines, a Farmingdale-based Part 204 Commuter Air Carrier, mimicked Cosmopolitan's brief activity. Montauk Caribbean Airways and its 19-seat De Havilland of Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter were purchased.
It provided service to East Hampton, New York-La Guardia, Newark, and Boston, as well as high-roller Atlantic City packages, but it went bankrupt in 1990 and terminated operations.
The Republic Passenger Terminal served as the operating basis for a few strictly scheduled flights, as planned.
According to its April 18, 1983 itinerary, the formerly-named Atlantic Express ran four daily nonstops to Albany, which continued to Syracuse, and five to Boston, two of which continued to Presque Isle, Maine, with 19-passenger Fairchild Swearingen Metro SA-227-IIIs. Its base of operations is Republic Airport. It flew a commuter aircraft constructed by Fairchild, the company that founded the airport and constructed the planes there. Mid-Atlantic Express was the carrier's new name.
Another Republic carrier was PBA Provincetown Boston Airiness, which was billed as "America's oldest regional airline." It began shuttle services to Newark International Airport with Cessna C-402 piston commuter planes, then upgraded to bigger, 18-passenger Embraer EMB-110 State corporate turboprops.
provides connecting service at the old North Terminal with other PBA and PEOPLEXPRESS flights, with the ease of shared ticketing, through-fares, and final destination baggage check The Northern System itinerary for June 20, 1986 featured five daily departures: 0700, 0950, 1200, 1445, and 1755. The feeder deal was kept after Continental purchased PEOPLEXPRESS.
Precision Airlines, the only carrier to offer simultaneous service from Long Island MacArthur Airport, operated its own 19-passenger turboprop—in this case, the Dornier Do-228-200—as of May 1993, branded as Northeast Airlink, using its two-letter "NW" code, and draping its aircraft in its major carrier's red livery.
Long Island MacArthur Airport is located on Long Island, New York:
Long Island MacArthur Airport, which was always the island's primary scheduled-airline supplier after JFK International and La Guardia, was always a secondary facility after JFK International and La Guardia.
Its origins can be traced back to Section 303 of the 1938 Civil Aeronautics Act, which instructed the use of federal funds to establish landing areas suitable for both air commerce and, in the event of conflict or threat of war, war, the then-named Islip Airport, one of 200 airfields built with the $40 million, After a one-year, $1.5 million development project began in 1942, Authorizing the Development of Landing Areas for National Defense (DLAND) expenditure. Its intended goal, on the other hand, had always been public use.
The first of two airlines formed for afterwards rebranded Long Island MacArthur Airport service commenced operations seven years after the installation of a passenger terminal and restaurant, both of which were supported by the federal government.
With a fleet of 11-passenger de Havilland Doves and 15-passenger de Havilland Herons connecting Long Island with Boston, Newark, and Washington, it spread its wings three years later as Gateway Airlines on the air taxi level, with a fleet of 11-passenger de Havilland Doves and 15-passenger de Havilland Herons. Inadequate funding, on the other hand, contributed to its early extinction eight months later.
Scheduled service and sluggish passenger growth were driven by airport improvements such as a seven-story control tower, a new, circular, 50,000-square-foot terminal where a scene from the original Out-of-Towners was filmed, and a New York Air Route Traffic Control Center.
Mohawk, Allegheny (later USAir), and American were among the US national and major airlines that served as the airport's anchors, flying BAC-111s, DC-9s, and 727s to important business destinations like Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, Pittsburgh, and Chicago, infusing the facility with jet-associated prestige.
Northeastern International was the second Long Island-based carrier, founded to provide the sought Florida link, which it did so successfully when it launched four weekly round flights to Ft. Lauderdale. On February 11, 1982, two former Evergreen DC-8-50s flew from Fort Lauderdale to Orlando.
It ultimately serviced Miami and St. Petersburg with 727-100s, 727-200s, and DC-8-62s, serving as a catalyst for both passenger development and other airline appeal.
Despite its bankruptcy in 1985 and a shaky comeback to Long Island skies with infrequently leased DC-9 and MD-80 aircraft that led to its eventual demise the following year, it highlighted the importance of the crucial Florida link. AirTran, Allegiant, Cytogenetics III, Carnival, Delta Express, Eastern, Elite, Frontier, Pan Am, Southwest, Spirit, and USAir are among the airlines that will fill the gap.
Aside from these large carriers, the airport was served by a slew of turboprop regionals, many of which flew two-letter US major codeshare routes. Pilgrim, New Haven Airways (LATER NEWAIR), National Air, Air Vermont, Empire, RANSOME, Precision, Business Express, Allegheny Commuter, RANSOME, Precision, Business Express, Allegheny Commuter, RANSOME, Precision, Business Express, Allegheny Commuter, RANSOME, Precision, Business Express, Allegheny, Henson, Atlantic Coast, Shuttle America, PENAIR, and American Eagle are some of the airlines that fly. Their aircraft ranged in size from the 15-passenger Beech C99 to the 50-passenger De Havilland DHC-7 "Dash 7" from Canada.
Long Island MacArthur's development was aided by regional jets, which provided comparable jet speed and comfort on routes too thin to support larger aircraft but too far to be covered efficiently by turboprops, and allowed once-independent carriers to provide major airline hub fees in their image through marketing agreements and identical aircraft liveries.
Presidential Airways, as Continental Express and United Express, flew British Aerospace BAe-146-200s to Washington-Dulles; Comair, as the Delta Connection, flew Canadair CRJ-100s and -200s to Cincinnati; and ExpressJet, as Continental Express, flew British Aerospace BAe-146-200s to New York.
ASA Atlantic Southeast Airlines, also known as the Delta Connection, flies to Cleveland with Embraer ERJ-145s, and ASA Atlantic Southeast Airlines, also known as the Delta Connection, flies to Atlanta with CRJ-100s, -200s, and -700s.
During the three-decade period between 1970 and 2000, yearly airport passenger throughput increased from 118,000 to over 2.3 million, thanks to ever-expanding terminal and parking facilities.
East Hampton Airport is located in East Hampton, New York:
East Hampton Airport, which served the famed and rich region of the same name and was located on Long Island's South Shore, provided regular airline service with a mix of rotary- and fixed-wing aircraft, though largely on a seasonal basis.
It originated as a barnstorming field, with biplanes hopping to many other, comparable properties, akin to the Hempstead Plains, whose flat, clear stretches encouraged early airborne activity. However, as the number of flights increased, the necessity for a better managed facility prompted the building of three runways in 1936: 04/22, 10/28, and 16/34.
The East Hampton Star called the project "one of the best things ever attempted" the next year, saying, "Its importance in the future prosperity of East Hampton cannot be ignored."
Its first facilities were a 12-by-24-foot wooden structure that had previously been used by adjacent Camp Upton to train World War I Army soldiers and had been hauled to its current position. The airport's initial passenger waiting area, a converted chicken coop, was attached to it.
It, like Long Island MacArthur Airport in Islip, was designated as an emergency landing location, and cash from the Civil Aeronautics Authority was used to expand the airport in 1942.
A three-story, wood-shingled control tower emerged from the field two decades later, and a contemporary, rotunda-shaped terminal built three decades later-specifically in 1994.
The Town of East Hampton owns and operates the airport, which now covers 610 acres and has two asphalt runways: Runway 10-28, which is 4,255 feet long and 100 feet wide and offers an FAA-approved straight-in instrument approach, and Runway 16-34, which is 2,223 feet long and 75 feet wide and is primarily used by single-engine general aviation types.
The summer-only functioning of its control tower reflects its seasonality, with the common traffic advisory frequency (CTAF) serving as a verbal reporting and communication channel the rest of the year.
Its facilities include hangars and fixed base operators that provide ramp service, catering, REFUELLING, flight training, and EEROPLANE chartering.
According to the airport's website, "the airport services a mix of private pilots, charter flights, commercial firms (including Enterprise and Hertz car rental firms), and seasonal visitors." "There are about 30,000 operations per year, with the majority of that traffic occurring between May and September."
Its air carrier service is unique in terms of destinations, engine type, and operational region.
In 1982, East Hampton Airways advertised, "Now at your service at the airport." It connected the East End airport with New York-La Guardia, Teterboro, New Jersey, and White Plains' Westchester Country Airport. Flights to and from New York on a daily basis, air taxi anyplace, rental, and instruction. New, cheap, unique long-haul charter pricing."
According to their August 22, 1979 itinerary, Montauk Caribbean Airways offered comparable service, with a half-dozen destinations including Block Island, Boston, East Hampton, Fishers Island, Montauk, and New York-La Guardia. It had advertised, "Down east, down south, one of America's oldest scheduled commuter services."
The emergence of Trump Air two years later, which provided rotary-wing helicopter service to New York helipads, sparked a price war between the three East Hampton carriers, eventually leading to their death.
"Now you can fly to New York in twin-engine Grumman Widgeons," Long Island Airlines, based in Farmingdale, New York, which acquired Montauk Caribbean in 1985 and had operated a fleet of twin-engine Grumman Widgeon amphibians, advertised. "All-metal construction, twin Ranger engines, quiet, spacious, well-ventilated cabin make it the ultimate in modern day medium size aircraft."
You can fly in the Widgeon with the same assurance and peace of mind that you can in your luxury sedan. As the gap between you and the ground diminishes under your wing tips, you relax. You may talk, read, and work just as effortlessly as you would at home or at the workplace.
The sturdy Grumman construction of the Widgeon ensures safe and reliable air service. The time-pressed businessman will find this service to be the answer to his transportation problem, as it is flown by highly trained pilots with many hours of flight time both on land and on water."
It had five daily round-trip flights to New York, with westbound departures at 0825, 1020, 1230, 1500, and 1715, and eastbound returns at 0855, 1105, 1320, 1550, and 1800, all with 55-minute flight durations.
As of July 14, 1986, a later, but similarly named East Hampton Aire was offering two daily round trips to Groton/New London, with connections to JFK and Washington.
